U.S. PIRG is a federation of state-based advocacy groups, which works on campus and across the country on behalf of the public interest. This year, they are hiring 100 graduating college students to determine where this country is going: to solve our energy problems; to reform the campaign finance system; to safeguard individuals from identity theft; to fight hunger and homeless; and make an impact on many other public interest issues.

In their first year with U.S. PIRG, recent college graduates make a real impact on issues they care about. When Erin Eccleston started as a campus organizer at Arizona State University, she worked with students who saw a lot of problems on their campus and in their community, including the skyrocketing cost of higher education.

Erin worked with a group of students to help them understand the political process and how they could work to make their voices heard in Congress on this issue. The students made a student debt yearbook to highlight student debt at Arizona State. They ran phone call-in days to their members of Congress urging support for a bill to cut student loan interest rates in half.

At the height of the project, Erin worked closely with the student government to organize a discussion on the cost of higher education that featured House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Over 1000 people turned out for the event and 50 members of the media covered the event, drawing critical attention to the issue. Soon after, the House passed a student loan interest rate cut with overwhelming bipartisan support.

There are a lot of problems in this country, and U.S. PIRG needs more people working to solve them. If you are interested in learning more about what you can do with U.S. PIRG, please visit their website: http://www.uspirg.org/jobs.
