WVEC Action Alert
August 9, 2007
Below:
Aug. 15: Say
NO to coal-to-liquid fuels; come to demonstration in Beckley, W.Va.
Come one, come all, bring a friend or a carload! Come demonstrate at the National Coal-to-Liquid Fuel
Conference. Meet at the Kroger's parking lot in
Beaver*, W.Va. (in Raleigh County, near Beckley) at 11:00 a.m. for
shuttling to the 11:30-1:00 p.m. demonstration outside Glade Springs
Resort.
Why say No! to coal-to-liquid? US Rep. Nick Joe Rahall (D-W.Va.), representing powerful coal
interests instead of his constituents, is hosting the National
Coal-to-Liquids Conference Aug. 14-15 at the Glade Springs Resort. The
conference attendees (government, military, industry) are working to
bilk the American people into footing the bill (billions of dollars) for
these greenhouse-gas factories that produce fuel as a byproduct. In
addition to adding to catastrophic climate change, the increased coal
demand will increase mountaintop removal mining and all its associated
damage to communities and the environment in Appalachia.
Tell the coal barons they are not in control! Tell the world you want
a clean, sustainable, and just future for your children and
grandchildren, not a toxic planet!
*Directions: From I-77, take I-64 East toward Lewisburg. Take
exit 125A, follow the signs toward Beaver. At the traffic light, turn
right. The Kroger's parking lot is on your right.

Coal-to-liquids
fact sheet--Plenty of reasons to say NO to coal-to-liquid
Click here to read, save and print a fact sheet on coal-to-liquid.
Thanks to OVEC intern Cynthia Wildfire for the extensive research
she did to compile this fact sheet. If you can't make it to the
demonstration, please use this information to write a letter to the
editor, no matter where you live.
While the just-passed House energy bill and the recently-passed Senate energy bill do not bestow your tax dollars onto coal-to-liquid promoters, the
fight is not over. When negotiators try to bring the two bills together,
you can bet some will try to insert coal-to-liquid provisions into the
compromise bill. Read more about the coal-to-liquid showdown here. Your letters to the editor can help educate others.

The
Electricity Fairy
August 11: 7 p.m. West Virginia premieres
of two new Appalshop films: The Electricity Fairy and Up
the Ridge. Admission $4, or $2 for members. At the LaBelle
Theater, 311 D Street, South Charleston, W.Va. The Electricity
Fairy is Tom Hansell's new film, about West Virginia, Tennessee, and
Kentucky as exporters of both coal and electricity. Exploitation of
natural resources for power generation makes the impact of the
nation’s electricity consumption highly visible in these three
states. The film combines present day documentary footage with old
educational films and an animated folk tale to reveal the hidden
costs of America's major source of electricity. See www.appalshop.org/electricityfairy/ .
